Hair and the Patriarchy
I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while and then this meme popped up on Instagram and I knew it was time to sit and tackle what had been bothering me around hair and the patriarchy. Everything about a woman is political and I recently discovered this also includes our hair. Patriarchy is weird.
When I was growing up I remember my mother and my aunts always saying that my grandmother told them all that when they turned 45 it was time to cut off their hair and adopt the “old lady hair style.”
Over the years I watched all of my aunts buck this tradition and keep their long locks regardless of how many years they have been on this earth. As I started to add more years to my age, I started thinking about my long hair and why my Grandmother was so insistent that it be cut and that you transition to a new you.
A few weeks ago, I realized it what it meant was it was time to transition to the new, unf*ckable you. You see, ladies, society needs to know when to start ignoring you, even if your back is turned. If you have long, flowing hair then society expects to see youth and beauty when you turn around and if you have the audacity to not have these qualities, it offends them, especially the men who thought for a brief second that they may want to f*ck you.
It really is grotesque when you start to think about it. This is why this new meme with “What 50 looks like in 1985 and what 50 looks like now” peaked my interest and the interest of the internet. We’ve come a long way, ladies. We no longer let society dictate to us when we can and cannot have long hair or short, when we have to stop being seen and retreat into our cocoons of old ladies that no one wants to fuck.
While The Golden Girls Blanche’s character certainly didn’t conform to this standard in her dating life, she did adopt the “old lady hair style” and conformed in that way, but in other ways she was a sexual revolutionist and for that I give the show credit!
Me personally, I’m going to keep f*cking with the patriarchy and keep my long hair for as long as I damn well please.
